Language and religion

The official language is Spanish which contains subtle differences from Spanish spoken in other parts of the world (the use of "vos" for "you" singular, some sounds and words, and lots of expressions).
Porteños can usually understand Portuguese and Italian due to the similarities in the languages and proximity with Italians and Brazilieans.
The official religion in Argentina is of the Roman Catholic Church, however all religions are welcomed here.

Safety

Buenos Aires is a relatively safe city, but it is a very big city. Tourists are advised to be sensible, not to leave a purse on the table unattended and go to the bathroom, walk in well lit streets at night, etc.

Gay Life

Over the last five years the city has become well known for its liberal attitude to gay life so that it has become the destination of choice for gay tourists to South America. Buenos Aires now has many gay discos, bars, hotels, saunas, movie theaters, and possibly the best-looking men you will see anywhere.

Argentina is now recovering strongly from the economic crisis and devaluation of 2002 and prices of just about everything are, compared to the northern hemisphere, at bargain level. Consequently in BuenosAires there has been an increase, along with the increase in LGBT tourism, in gay-friendly businesses such as real estate, apartment rental, travel agents, language classes, tango classes, bars, restaurants, hotels and guesthouses. As well as here you can find many of these advertised in the gay maps and magazines.

In February 2005 Buenos Aires was host to a conference by the International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association IGLTA. In September 2007 the International Gay & Lesbian Football Association will hold the Football (soccer) World Championship in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

City and Climate

Buenos Aires is the capital of Argentina Republic and a very important tourist destination in South America. It is one of the biggest cities in the world, with a population of more than 10 million.

Buenos Aires climate is mild all year round, with an average temperature of 18ºC (64ºF). Extreme temperatures are few and far between which makes Buenos Aires very pleasant. The hottest days of summer are in January and the coldest days of winter are in July.

History and customs

The city was first founded in 1536 by don Pedro de Mendoza, and then founded again by Juan de Garay in 1580. During the 19th century there was a great migration from Spain, Italy, Syria, Poland and Russia, this mix giving Buenos Aires the colorful and vibrant culture it has today.
During the 20th century more migrants arrived from other Latin American countries and a more still from Europe. The people from Buenos Aires (know as "porteños": "from the port city") are generally warm and hospitable. They have their own habits: are futbol fanatic; love meeting friends at a bar; enjoy going out at night (they have dinner after 9 p.m.); argue and express their opinion about all topics and have "mate": a drink consisting of warm water and a tipical herb, which is usually shared with friends.
